Diwali: A Festival of Light

Diwali, from the Sanskrit word Deepavali, meaning “row of lights,” is a five-day holiday celebrated across different faiths and traditions, including Hinduism, Sikhism, and Jainism. Often known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali celebrates themes of light over darkness, hope, renewal, freedom, and enlightenment. This year’s celebration on (November 9 from 6-8pm in St. Luke’s Undercroft) will feature a variety of hands-on activities and opportunities to learn about and experience Diwali traditions. Participants will decorate their own Dandiya sticks before joining in traditional Dandiya and Garba dancing, guided by instructors. Guests will also have the opportunity to learn how to make laddu, a traditional Indian sweet, and enjoy a short conversation about the history and significance of Diwali. Of course, there will also be plenty of delicious Indian food, including chai, build-your-own chaat, samosas, and sweets! Admission is $25 per person, which includes all activities, materials, food, and refreshments. The event is family-friendly, and no previous knowledge of Diwali or dance experience is necessary. Everyone is welcome! Advance registration is encouraged, and tickets can be purchased through the New Neighbors Coalition Facebook page or via Zeffy.
