World Refugee Sunday

June 28 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Join St. Luke’s and New Neighbors Coalition for a Refugee Sunday service on June 28th at 10am in the St. Luke’s Church in honor of World Refugee Day. The service will include a special prayers, songs, a sermon and world flag procession. World Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to honor refugees around the world. It falls each year on June 20th and acknowledges the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution. This year, World Refugee Day June 2026 9focuses on the right of every human being across the globe to seek safety and protection. 2026 marks the 75th anniversary of the United Nations’ Geneva Convention of 1951. This convening led to a multinational treaty that was enacted primarily in response to the horrors perpetuated against Jews during the Holocaust. The Convention recognizes that humans have the right to flee from persecution, and that it is the responsibility of the nations within the treaty to grant protection to those who seek it. This year’s World Refugee Day centers around the importance of standing in solidarity with refugees, both around the globe, and in our own communities. This year’s Refugee Sunday service will invite us to reflect on what it means to be in solidarity with those who are seeking safety, and to honor the journeys and resilience of our immigrant neighbors. Together, we’ll explore ideas of belonging and connection and consider what it means to embrace our shared humanity across language and culture.
