An experience of Celtic song, story and poetry by Irish brothers Mícheál & Owen Ó Súilleabháin
Did you know that St. Patrick wasn’t Irish?
He was captured by Irish slaving pirates as a boy from his home in West Britain and trafficked to Northern Ireland.
Perhaps the most famous saint in the world, 1500 years later main streets of cities all over the world are shut down for parades held in his honor.
What wisdom did Patrick have to teach a culture where he was an alien? Why did the Irish welcome this foreigner into their hearts who was preaching a whole new theology that challenged all the cultural norms of the day?
And what wisdom does Patrick have in store for you today?
Through song, story and poetry the brothers Ó Súilleabháin will take you on a journey to reveal what wisdom is being passed on through the Celtic Christian lineage that they have inherited.
There will be two parts of this celebration of the St. Patrick.
There will be an educational component during the day of the March 15 (at Bush School, Infinity Performing Arts and St. Luke’s), where children/individuals can came come and learn more of the meaning behind some of the Celtic culture and story of St. Patrick. The St. Luke’s group will learn some songs and then join the brothers Ó Súilleabháin on stage that evening for the concert performance. That evening there will be a formal concert at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in downtown Jamestown.
ABOUT
Owen and Mícheál ‘Moley’ Ó Súilleabháin are brothers from one of Ireland’s most esteemed musical and artistic families. Singers, storytellers, poets, their vocal harmony and stories of life experience, mixed with a wild sense of humor, make you feel at ease, in awe, and entirely entertained.
They draw from a huge repertoire spanning thousands of years, embodying Ireland in song: Ireland’s oldest tradition, Celtic sean nós; Medieval Gregorian Chant from the Monastic period; Irish folk songs in English and Gaelic; original inspirational pop-songs, and even human beatbox and Irish rap!
The brothers have recorded and performed around the world with their mother, singer and theologian Rev. Nóirín Ní Riain Ph.D., in a trio called AMEN.
Their late father, Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, renowned musicologist, composer and pianist, brought traditional Irish music and culture to the world stage and founded the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick, an internationally recognized center of excellence in the arts. The lads proudly continue their parents’ legacy – bringing authentic Irish culture to audiences the world over.
