Displaced by drought and food shortages\, Martina\, Luis\, and their children journey to Chihuahua City\, toward a new and uncertain future in a government-funded Indigenous settlement. \nWith tenderness\, intelligence\, and deep insight into the many shapes resistance can take\, Out of the Sierra offers a testimony to human resilience and the power of community in the face of broken systems. Blanco considers Indigenous resistance and identity\, race\, and climate change with compassion and care\, What can we learn from the Rarámuri people\, who are resisting assimilation and upholding traditional knowledge in our era of climate catastrophe? \nBased on two years of oral history collection and participatory field work\, Out of the Sierra elevates the stories of the Gutiérrez family and interrogates the systems and history that caused their displacement and poverty. \nWe will be meeting on Monday\, December 9th\, 2024\, at 7pm in the Fenn Library at St. Luke’s Church (in the undercroft\, behind the Johnson Stage).

DESCRIPTION:Las Posadas is a new event at St. Luke’s recreating Mary and Joseph’s search for an inn as they expect the birth of Jesus. \nWith the wonderful musical support of the Rev. Yuri Rodriguez\, we will begin at the church and go door to door through the nearby blocks of the city to sing and ask for the mercy of shelter together\, ending with the open door and warmth of the church. Please come to the church dressed for outdoor weather (and with a warm heart!) to the church on Friday. Dec. 13th at 6:30 to celebrate this journey!

SUMMARY:Latin American Music Workshop
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, December 14th at 1 pm\, St. Luke’s will host a Latin American Worship Music Workshop in the chapel. This interactive session will provide an opportunity for participants to learn about and experience sacred music from Latin American traditions. The workshop is open to all\, regardless of musical or Spanish language proficiency\, and is designed to create a welcoming space for learning and community engagement through music. \nThe workshop will be led by La Reverenda Yuriria (Yuri) Rodríguez\, a newly ordained priest from the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis. Before becoming a priest\, Yuri worked as a singer\, artist\, and educator\, specializing in Latin American music and culture. For 20+ years\, Yuri has performed in\, and conducted choirs of sacred and Latin American music in the United States. Through music\, she has developed programs and curriculums to accompany diverse communities in their journeys of faith\, affirm their sense of identity\, and celebrate God already present in the other.

This is St. Luke’s fourth annual Christmas in a Barn\, a service is designed to experience the Christmas story in a way that is interactive\, engaging\, and accessible for all ages. This year\, the service will be the Church of the Wild gathering for this month: As we tell the story of the Nativity in the presence of animals\, it is an opportunity to experience the presence of God who comes to us in our wildness and creatureliness. Before and after the service\, there are opportunities to enjoy the companionship of the farm’s alpacas.
