SUMMARY:Welcome The Wisdom Of Saint Patrick An experience of Celtic song\, story and poetry
DESCRIPTION:An experience of Celtic song\, story and poetry by Irish brothers Mícheál & Owen Ó Súilleabháin \nDid you know that St. Patrick wasn’t Irish? \nHe was captured by Irish slaving pirates as a boy from his home in West Britain and trafficked to Northern Ireland. \nPerhaps the most famous saint in the world\, 1500 years later main streets of cities all over the world are shut down for parades held in his honor. \nWhat wisdom did Patrick have to teach a culture where he was an alien? Why did the Irish welcome this foreigner into their hearts who was preaching a whole new theology that challenged all the cultural norms of the day? \nAnd what wisdom does Patrick have in store for you today? \nThrough song\, story and poetry the brothers Ó Súilleabháin will take you on a journey to reveal what wisdom is being passed on through the Celtic Christian lineage that they have inherited. \nThere will be two parts of this celebration of the St. Patrick. \nThere will be an educational component during the day of the March 15 (at Bush School\, Infinity Performing Arts and St. Luke’s)\, where children/individuals can came come and learn more of the meaning behind some of the Celtic culture and story of St. Patrick. The St. Luke’s group will learn some songs and then join the brothers Ó Súilleabháin on stage that evening for the concert performance. That evening there will be a formal concert at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in downtown Jamestown. \nABOUT \nOwen and Mícheál ‘Moley’ Ó Súilleabháin are brothers from one of Ireland’s most esteemed musical and artistic families. Singers\, storytellers\, poets\, their vocal harmony and stories of life experience\, mixed with a wild sense of humor\, make you feel at ease\, in awe\, and entirely entertained. \nThey draw from a huge repertoire spanning thousands of years\, embodying Ireland in song: Ireland’s oldest tradition\, Celtic sean nós; Medieval Gregorian Chant from the Monastic period; Irish folk songs in English and Gaelic; original inspirational pop-songs\, and even human beatbox and Irish rap! \nThe brothers have recorded and performed around the world with their mother\, singer and theologian Rev. Nóirín Ní Riain Ph.D.\, in a trio called AMEN. \nTheir late father\, Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin\, renowned musicologist\, composer and pianist\, brought traditional Irish music and culture to the world stage and founded the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick\, an internationally recognized center of excellence in the arts. The lads proudly continue their parents’ legacy – bringing authentic Irish culture to audiences the world over. \nWatch Owen and Mícheál’s live concert on PBS \nhttps://www.pbs.org/…/owen-and-moley-o-suilleabhain…/ \nHomepage \nhttps://www.owenandmoley.com \nTuras d’Anam \nhttps://www.turasdanam.com \nOwenandmoley.com \nhttps://www.owenandmoley.com/

SUMMARY:Fresh Water Plastic Pollution: The Plastic Paradox
DESCRIPTION:Plastic provides a real paradox in the world of material science. It is incredibly strong but without the mass that similar strength materials usually possess. In addition\, it is very moldable so that you can contort it into a myriad of common place\, super-utilitarian items. The versatility and durability of plastic allow it to be used in place of a myriad of natural materials\, but these same features make it an environmental bane. Here we will explore this paradox and what it means for the waters we love so much. Much attention has been paid to plastic as an oceans issue\, but increasingly we are finding that plastic flows through freshwater systems on its way from land to sea. Come hear from one of the foremost experts in the field of Freshwater Plastic Pollution.\n\nDr. Sherri A. Mason (aka “Sam”) earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin. She completed her doctorate in Chemistry at the University of Montana as a NASA Earth System Science scholar. While a Professor of Chemistry at SUNY Fredonia\, her research group was among the first to study the prevalence and impact of plastic pollution within freshwater ecosystems.\n\nSam has been featured within hundreds of mass media articles including the BBC\, The Guardian\, the New York Times\, the Huffington Post\, and National Public Radio’s All Things Considered and Studio A1. Her work formed the basis for the Microbeads-Free Water Act\, which was signed into law by President Obama in December 2015. Similar legislation has been approved or is being considered at various locations internationally.\n\nAmong her accolades Dr. Mason has been awarded:\n\nEPA Environmental Champion in 2016;\nExcellence in Environmental Research by the Earth Month Network in 2017\nHeinz Award in Public Policy in 2018\nGreat Lakes Leadership Award from the Great Lakes Protection Fund in 2021\n\nShe currently serves as the Director of Sustainability at Penn State Erie\, The Behrend College.

SUMMARY:Environmental "green" - how our ecological and economic health can only improve collaboratively
DESCRIPTION:A point that is often missed by those who are not in the conservation field\, is that smart conservation is an essential piece of planning for smart economic growth. Because let’s face it: if we were to jeopardize our quality of life by harming our most precious natural resources\, who would want to live or plan a future here? The great news is that\, when comparing our county’s environmental health against much of the rest of the country\, we are in good shape. We are not routinely threatened by forest fires\, hurricanes\, droughts\, or floods. Our water quality is top grade\, and our landscape supports abundant agriculture and lush forests. Pretty great! Now\, the smart thing is to not only acknowledge those strengths\, but to also put in place policies to ensure that we can sustainably maintain our environmental health in this rapidly changing world\, while also making improvements where needed. Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy’s director of conservation\, Twan Leenders\, will discuss the work that CWC is doing to accomplish just that.\n\nTwan Leenders is the Director of Conservation at the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy (https://chautauquawatershed.org). He served 10 years at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History in Jamestown\, NY (www.rtpi.org). He previously was the conservation biologist for the Connecticut Audubon Society. Twan is a Curatorial Affiliate in Vertebrate Zoology at Yale University’s Peabody Museum of Natural History. He is a professional herpetologist and enthusiastic wildlife photographer\, with over twenty years of field experience in Central America. Twan recently authored ‘Amphibians of Costa Rica – A Field Guide’ and the companion volume ‘Reptiles of Costa Rica – A Field Guide’\, both published by Cornell University Press.
