SUMMARY:Cesar Franck Organ Series
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, July 8th at 7:00 pm\, St. Luke’s will host Ron McEntire’s third organ concert of César Franck’s works. This year being the 200th anniversary of composer César Franck’s birth (1822-1890)\, Ron will present Franck’s “Fantaisie in A Major”\, “Cantabile”\, and “Pièce Héroïque”. Franck is known for his “Symphony in D Minor\,” his violin sonata\, and his famous vocal piece\, “Panis Angelicus\,” and his 12 organ works. Franck originated the “romantic\, symphonic organ” style of playing. Ron presented Franck’s Grande Pièce Symphonique\, at the organ Inaugural Concert in November of 2021\, and Franck’s first six pieces at a concert on Shrove Tuesday\, March 1st\, 2022. \n“On a personal note\,” Ron adds\, “I feel an urgency to play while I still can\, these beautiful pieces on this wonderful instrument that was created to play this music so very well. And I play in gratitude for the continued ability to play and read the music during this difficult time. Playing has been and continues to be a very spiritual healing for me.” \nLight refreshments will be offered following the conclusion of the concert. All donations go to the continued care of this beautiful instrument.

SUMMARY:Sacred Sites Open House
DESCRIPTION:“I love St. Luke’s because our walls can’t contain us.” \nIt was on our yard signs long before the pandemic. But the last two years have illustrated the point: The building is a hub of activity\, containing the heartbeat of worship\, community\, and service\, but this hub connects to a wheel turning outward\, expanding well beyond our walls. \nWe’re celebrating this hub\, our building\, through participation in the New York Landmark Conservancy’s Sacred Sites Open House this summer. The Landmark Conservancy awarded St. Luke’s a $45\,000 grant toward our capital campaign in June of 2018. As part of the Sacred Sites Open House\, St. Luke’s will be open starting at noon on July 23rd for a presentation by Patrick Monaghan\, St. Luke’s Warden for Property\, on the features of our historic building. St. Luke’s was built in 1894 with rock-faced Medina sandstone that blends Late Gothic Revival and Romanesque Revival elements. The church was designed by Boston architect W. P. Wentworth; it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \nFollowing the presentation at St. Luke’s\, participants are invited to join our friends at First Presbyterian Church\, which is also hosting a Sacred Sites presentation at 1 pm\, offered by Dr. John Smagner\, a Conservancy supporter and scholar. Smagner has written a Master’s Thesis on the history and architecture of First Presbyterian Church extensively. \nRefreshments are to follow Smagner’s presentation.
