SUMMARY:New Neighbors Coalition Bike Giveaway
DESCRIPTION:In October 2023\, with the generous support of Matt Canby from Pearl City Cycle and community donations\, New Neighbors Coalition donated over 20 bikes and helmets to new neighbors to help facilitate transportation needs. We are planning another event on May 10th at 4pm in the St. Luke’s Undercroft\, in honor of Bike to Work Week\, which is held from May 13-19th. Similar to the last event\, the goal is to provide newly arrived immigrants who have come to our region since October with a functional donated bike\, a helmet\, and a [no]crash course in road safety for bikers. \nDo you have a gently used bicycle sitting in your garage or storage unit? Instead of letting it collect dust\, why not donate it to someone in need? Your donation can make a significant difference in someone’s life by providing them with a means of transportation to school\, work\, or other essential destinations. Bicycles in need of minor reparations are also accepted. We also need financial donations to purchase helmets. For further donation instructions\, please contact Momina Di Blasio at momina@stlukesjamestown.org or call St. Luke’s Episcopal Church at (716)\n483-6405.

SUMMARY:Ascension Day Evensong
DESCRIPTION:As we come to the end of the programmatic year\, we are wrapping up our Ron McEntire Choral Scholars Program with an Evensong on Ascension Day\, May 9th at 7pm in the church. \nPresented through the liturgy\, the Evensong will be interspersing the sacred music repertoire the scholars have been working on during the term. The Prelude will be provided by Ron himself\, pieces he recorded on the console of the organ (isn’t it amazing we can keep a part of him alive?). After the conclusion of the liturgy\, the scholars will perform their secular rep\, spanning from the Elizabethan Age to recent musical theatre. It is promising to be a beautiful night to feature these amazing singers\, and honor Ron.

SUMMARY:Living As Leading: Youth Sunday
DESCRIPTION:It is a solemn tradition at St. Luke’s to let our young people take over the 10 am service for a special Youth Sunday worship planned and lead by the gifted youth of St. Luke’s. This year\, St. Luke’s Youth Sunday tradition has grown with the youth taking on the planning of two services – one in the fall and another in the spring. \nOn April 21st at 10 am in the church\, St. Luke’s will celebrate Youth Sunday. Planning this worship experience is a highlight in the programmatic year for the young people of St. Luke’s\, and this spring is no exception: the youth have chosen “Living as Leading” as the theme for the day’s service. On Youth Sunday\, the mood tends to be more playful\, and the music a bit more secular and rambunctious. Aidan McCleery\, one of St. Luke’s remarkable high school seniors (pictured here as St. John in our 2023 Christmas Eve Pageant!) will be the morning’s guest preacher. \nIn preparation for Youth Sunday\, teens from 6th through 12th grade are invited to join the youth group for lock-in the night before (April 20th at 7 pm): a rehearsal of the worship service\, games\, an overnight in the Undercroft\, and breakfast together the next morning.

SUMMARY:"Bearing Witness" : St. Luke's Lenten Program 2
DESCRIPTION:Through video\, Scripture\, and discussion\, we explore the situation (past and present) in the Holy Land – with a specific focus on the Episcopal Church’s ministry in the Diocese of Jerusalem. Having spent several years living in Palestine\, Jessica Frederick will lead this session.\n\nPrior to this discussion\, we will gather in the church with a special stations of the cross service – an ancient practice which developed by pilgrims to the Holy Land to bring back some of the mystery and spirituality of Jesus’s march to Golgotha. The stations installed at St. Luke’s symbolically depict Jesus as a monarch butterfly on migration to transformation. These images dovetail with work of the New Neighbors Coalition and brings the stations in to contemporary focus as we invite Jesus into our current global instability and global crisis of human safety around the world.
