SUMMARY:Migration Mysteries
DESCRIPTION:Ornithologist and St. Luke’s parishioner John Rappole will give a presentation on his newest book\, Migration Mysteries: Adventures\, Disasters\, and Epiphanies in a Life with Birds\, at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute on Saturday\, November 2 at 1 pm.\n\nRappole’s lifelong journey has been in search of one thing—finding out why birds migrate. The developer and chief proponent of the “dispersal theory” of bird migration\, Rappole takes readers on a tour of the decades-long discovery process that led him to propose a counter to the still–widely accepted “northern home\,” or weather-based theory of migration. Recognizing parallel patterns with human migration\, Rappole will present on the dynamics which influence migration patterns of people and birds alike.

SUMMARY:October Global Perspectives Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:In October\, the New Neighbor’s Coalition Global Perspectives Book Club will be taking a break from our books written by immigrant authors to read a book about an immigrant who came to live in Chautauqua County instead. Run! From Civil War to the NFL: The Jehuu Caulcrick Story is a biography written by local author\, Bill Burk\, that depicts Jehuu’s journey from Liberia to Western New York. From the back of the book: \n  \n“When he was seven years old Jehuu Caulcrick (Jay-you Call-crick) walked the Liberian coast with his family\, passing through checkpoints armed with child soldiers not much older than him\, blank faces\, teeth yellowed by jungle-juice and heroin\, AK-47s hanging off gaunt bodies. It was 1990\, the middle of country’s second civil war in ten years. He walked for nearly seven-hundred miles\, until he was nine years old. When he was twenty-seven years old Jehuu carried a football for the Buffalo Bills in the NFL for one yard and a first down\, his only carry in a five-year nomadic career as a professional football player. In between\, a lot happened.” \n  \nBill Burk and Run! will be featured at an upcoming book event. This is hosted in partnership with the Chautauqua Hall of Fame\, and the author himself. Please join us on September 11th at 6pm in the St. Luke’s Undercroft for a discussion with the author and then a stroll over to the Chautauqua Hall of Fame. \n  \nHere the link to purchase the book through the Good Neighbor Bookstore’s website\, a local bookshop in Lakewood:https://goodneighborbooks.com/book/9798988409205 \n  \nWe will be meeting on Monday\, October 28th\, 2024 at 7pm in the Fenn Library at St. Luke’s Church (in the undercroft\, behind the Johnson Stage). We encourage readers to join both for the September event and regular October book club meeting for different discussion opportunities!

SUMMARY:RUN! The Jehu Caulcrick Story
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, September 11 at 6 pm\, the community is invited to the St. Luke’s Undercroft (410 N. Main St and accessible via the 4th and Main St doors) for a New Neighbors Coalition led conversation with local author\, Bill Burk\, featuring the story of his book profiling Jehuu Caulcrick and his journey from his home in Liberia to the Buffalo Bills\, via Chautauqua County. Refreshments will be served. After the discussion\, we will make our way over to the Chautauqua Hall of Fame. Burk’s book will be available for purchase with an opportunity to get them signed by the author.  Bill Burk frames the story simply\,\n\n\nWhen he was seven years old Jehuu Caulcrick (Jay-you Call-crick) walked the Liberian coast with his family\, passing through checkpoints armed with child soldiers not much older than him\, blank faces\, teeth yellowed by jungle-juice and heroin\, AK-47s hanging off gaunt bodies. In between\, a lot happened.\n\n\nPlease use this link to register for the event: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/q42d5rb\n\nThis event is being hosted free of charge but donations are greatly appreciated and will go towards supporting new neighbors in our community.

SUMMARY:Trauma Informed Care Training Session 2
DESCRIPTION:In July\, the New Neighbors Coalition hosted Danielle Bernas\, the Director of Refugee & Immigrant Center for Healing at Jewish Family Services in Buffalo for the first of a 3-part training series on trauma-informed care that focuses on newly-arrived immigrants. Due to the generosity of Jewish Family Services\, the Coaltion was able to provide this opportunity to volunteers and community members free of cost. \nDanielle spoke on the importance of culturally responsive care when working with new neighbors\, as well as some additional context regarding the immigrant experience. She highlighted the importance of setting boundaries as volunteers and addressing our self-care needs\, while still engaging with new neighbors in a way that is empathetic and compassionate. \nIf you missed the training or just want a refresher\, the video is linked here and Danielle’s PowerPoint is here (Culturally Responsive Practice for Refugee Mental Health Services.) Danielle also provided us with some useful information regarding social integration\, which can be found here. \nThe second training session is scheduled for Wednesday\, August 28th from 5-6:30pm in the St. Luke’s Undercroft at 410 N. Main St\, Jamestown\, NY. Registration for the event is found here.

SUMMARY:Recovery Sunday
DESCRIPTION:On August 25th\, St. Luke’s will observe our annual Recovery Sunday service\, when we commemorate National Overdose Awareness Day\, remembering those who died from overdoses in the last year. This year\, we will also celebrate the fact that overdose deaths are down in Chautauqua County this year — in part due to the availability of Narcan in the community\, which saves lives by reversing the effects of an overdose. Recovery Sunday is also a day in which St. Luke’s recognizes and celebrates the journey of people who are in recovery from patterns of chaotic drug use in their lives. \nFollowing the 10 am service on August 25th\, St. Luke’s is organizing a prayer walk to pray for Spring Street where overdoses 30% of the County’s fatal overdoses have occurred.
