SUMMARY:Dupre's Station of the Cross
DESCRIPTION:Marcel Dupre (1886-1971) was organist at St. Sulpice in Paris\, which housed the largest of the symphonic organs built by Aristide Cavaille-Coll. He was also a frequent performer and organist composer in the United States as well as France. He especially\, loved the “Wanamaker” Organ in Philadelphia and often improvised on it. In 1931 he improvised and then completed the score for “Le Chemin de la Croix.” (Stations of the Cross). In Catholic Churches\, you will find on the walls of the church depictions of these 14 stations which refer to the last hours before Jesus crucifixion. These include “Jesus is condemned to death”\, “Jesus meets his mother”\, Jesus Falls to the ground” “Jesus is Crucified” and “Jesus is laid in the tomb.” These meditations were inspired by a poem for each station written by Paul Claudel. On April 1\, 7:00 P.M. Ron McEntire will be performing the work including the recitation of the poem between each station. The newly renovated St. Luke’s organ is especially equipped to do justice to this magnificent moving work. All are invited to attend.

SUMMARY:Savoring the Sounds of Organ on Shrove Tuesday
DESCRIPTION:On Shrove Tuesday (March 1) at 7 pm\, Ron McEntire will perform the first of several concerts in 2022\, which will cover all the organ works of composer César Franck (1822-1890). Franck is known for: his Symphony in D Minor\, his violin sonata\, his famous vocal piece\, “Panis Angelicus\,” and his 12 organ works. He originated the “romantic\, symphonic organ” style of playing\, in contrast to the Baroque composers of Bach\, Clerambault\, Couperin and Daquin. In collaboration with the organ builder\, Aristide Cavaillé-Coll\, the organs of Paris became legendary for their size and sound. The composers Vierne\, Widor\, Dupre\, Durufle\, and Messiaen followed in this tradition and have composed some of the greatest organ music ever written; it all began with Franck. Franck’s output was published in three stages: The first six pieces in 1868\, then three pieces published 10 years later\, which premiered at the Festival Hall of the Palais du Trocadéro\, newly constructed for the Universal Exposition. His final three Chorals were published in 1890 a few months before his death. The performance at St. Luke’s on March 1 will feature five of the first six pieces. This will include the 1) Fantasie in C\, 2) Prélude\, Fugue and Variation\, 3) Pastorale\, 4) Prière and 6) Final. (Number 5)\, the Grande Pièce Symphonique\, was played at the organ Inaugural concert in November last year.)

SUMMARY:Blue Christmas Service on the Darkest Night of the Year
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Blue Christmas service\, a time when we can\, with others\, acknowledge the “blue” feelings we have at Christmas time\, the reasons for them\, and offer them to God.\n\nAs we near the longest night of the year (the Winter Solstice)\, it is right to gather on what has been called the “long dark night of the soul” and “the winter of our discontent” in which memories of past experiences and the pain of present experiences can become overwhelming. For some\, Christmas Day is the most difficult. For others\, it may be Christmas Eve\, or New Years Eve\, or the beginning of another lonely New Year.\n\nIn this service\, we’ll have some singing appropriate to the season\, recognizing that this is not a season of joy for everyone. We will invite you to reflect on the pain\, the loneliness\, and the sadness you may feel and offer it to God for healing and transformation. We pray that you will find hope and comfort in knowing that you are not alone. Always remember that God knows your pain and loves you unconditionally.
