SUMMARY:"Who We Are" film screening
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated at the age of 39 years. On January 16\, we honor his life by imagining where we would be as country if he had lived a longer life\, and what we can now do to make up for lost time.\n\nThis fascinating documentary gives us a roadmap toward becoming our best selves by learning where we squandered opportunities in the past or let negative forces erode our pledge as one indivisible nation\, with liberty and justice for all.\n\nJeffery Robinson had one of the best educations in America. He went to Marquette University and Harvard Law School and has been a trial lawyer for over 40 years – as a public defender\, in private practice\, at the ACLU\, and now at The Who We Are Project. In 2011\, Robinson began raising his then 13-year-old nephew and\, as a Black man raising a Black son\, struggled with what to tell his son about racism in America. How\, he wondered\, did we get here? And when he started looking at our Nation’s history\,\n\nRobinson was shocked by what he had not known. For the past 10 years\, in community centers\, concert halls\, houses of worship\, and conference rooms across America\, he has been sharing what he learned.\n\nIn WHO WE ARE – A Chronicle of Racism in America\, Robinson faces his largest audience\, asking all of us to examine who we are\, where we come from\, and who we want to be.\n\nAnchored by Robinson’s 2018 performance at NYC’s historic Town Hall Theater\, the film interweaves historical and present-day archival footage\, Robinson’s personal story\, and observational and interview footage capturing Robinson’s meetings with Black change-makers and eyewitnesses to history. From a hanging tree in Charleston\, South Carolina\, to a walking tour of the origins of slavery in colonial New York\, to the site of a 1947 lynching in rural Alabama\, the film brings history to life\, exploring the enduring legacy of white supremacy and our collective responsibility to overcome it.\n\nIn WHO WE ARE – A Chronicle of Racism in America\, Robinson exposes how deeply encoded white supremacy and the oppression of Black Americans is in our nation’s history. Weaving heartbreak\, humor\, passion\, and rage\, Robinson shows us how legalized discrimination and state-sanctioned brutality\, murder\, dispossession\, and disenfranchisement continued long after slavery ended\, profoundly impeding Black Americans’ ability to create and accumulate wealth as well as to gain access to jobs\, housing\, education\, and health care. His words lay bare an all-but-forgotten past\, as well as our shared responsibility to create a better country in our lifetimes.\n\nGeneral – $3.90 (includes one ticket and a $.40 donation)\nAlly – $39.00 (includes four tickets and a $25 donation)\nPatron – $390.00 (includes eight tickets and a $362.00 donation)\n\nAll proceeds support the New Neighbors Coalition of Jamestown Fund held at the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation\, which is used to assist in refugee resettlement in Jamestown.

SUMMARY:Star of Wonder! Epiphany EVENTure at Martz-Kohl Observatory
DESCRIPTION:What it was like for the wise men to follow the star? The church celebrates the story of these three travelers on the feast of the Epiphany (Jan. 6th).\nTaking our cue from the wise men (or ancient astronomers\, If you will)\, our partners at St. Luke’s Church are organizing for a special star-gazing event at the Martz-Kohl Observatory on Friday\, January 6th at 6:30 pm. We will remember the wise men and enjoy the wonders of the solar system\, exploring planets\, stars\, constellations and the moon – and using observatory telescopes (weather permitting.) \nPlease dress WARM for this event\, as the room with the telescopes is unheated. \nThis family-friendly event is intended for children\, youth\, and adults of all ages; the Martz-Kohl Observatory is located at 176 Robbin Hill Road in Frewsburg. \nTo cover operational expenses\, the observatory suggests a donation of $2 per student and $5 per adult\, as they do not receive funding for this purpose; all donations support the observatory.

SUMMARY:Blue Christmas Service
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Blue Christmas service\, a time when we can\, with others\, acknowledge the “blue” feelings we have at Christmas time\, the reasons for them\, and offer them to God.\n\nAs we near the longest night of the year (the Winter Solstice)\, it is right to gather on what has been called the “long dark night of the soul” and “the winter of our discontent” in which memories of past experiences and the pain of present experiences can become overwhelming. For some\, Christmas Day is the most difficult. For others\, it may be Christmas Eve\, or New Years Eve\, or the beginning of another lonely New Year.\n\nIn this service\, we’ll have some singing appropriate to the season\, recognizing that this is not a season of joy for everyone. We will invite you to reflect on the pain\, the loneliness\, and the sadness you may feel and offer it to God for healing and transformation. We pray that you will find hope and comfort in knowing that you are not alone. Always remember that God knows your pain and loves you unconditionally.

SUMMARY:Empty Bowls Project
DESCRIPTION:St. Luke’s Church and the Jamestown Public and Mobile Market are teaming up with the Chautauqua Area Potters to host the Empty Bowl Project in Jamestown on Saturday\, December 10th.\n\n“Empty Bowls” is an annual fund raising event held all over the world. Potters everywhere gather to create hundreds of one of a kind ceramic bowls that are given to persons willing to make a modest contribution to a local charity serving food to the hungry.\n\nLocally\, this event is sponsored by Chautauqua Area Potters (CAP)\, a loosely organized assembly of the area’s amateur and professional potters. Many of these individuals work together at Mudslingers\, the pottery studio owned and operated by Ron Nasca in downtown Fredonia. Others in the group work in their own studios. Over the years the fund drive has met with growing success in Fredonia and now it is coming to Jamestown.\n\nWhile numerous individuals have created the hundreds of beautiful\, one of a kind bowls\, none are signed by the maker. Instead\, they are imprinted with the “Empty Bowls” logo thus continuing to remind the user that there are hungry persons in the world. The bowls come in sizes designed to acknowledge contributions of $10\, $20\, and $30.\n\nDuring the Season of Advent when many are preparing for the holiday season and looking for the perfect Christmas gift\, this event will allow you to come get in the holiday season with bowl of soup\, live music\, the opportunity to walk away with a one of a kind gift AND to help address food insecurity in our own community.

SUMMARY:Food As Medicine Adult Forum
DESCRIPTION:How do we perceive the food we consume and its relationship to the nourishment of our bodies? How mindful are we of the foods available to us\, to the children in our community\, to others of different means? The Jamestown Public Market has long viewed ‘food as medicine’ as vital to the work we do. But what we if we all changed our perception of food as something not just to eat but to heal?\n\nMarket director Linnea Haskin will share the ideas behind the ‘food as medicine’ movement and ways we can be more mindful of how food nourishes us physically\, mentally and spiritually.

SUMMARY:2040: The Movie
DESCRIPTION:2040 follows Gameau’s imagining of a future for his four-year old daughter Velvet\, where climate change has been solved. Described as “an exercise in fact-based dreaming” the film is structured as a letter to his daughter whereby Gameau travels around the world investigating numerous solutions that can contribute towards climate mitigation and imagining what a future would be like where they have been implemented at scale. In choosing what to feature in the film\, Gameau restricted it to solutions that are either already available or have a realistic potential to greatly contribute to reversing climate change by the year 2040. The film features interviews with numerous academics\, ecological experts and entrepreneurs and covers five broad areas.\n\nGreenUp Jamestown began in 2018 out of conversations at St. Luke’s with local community partners\, as part of an attempt to celebrate Earth Day as a local grass-roots effort. Since then\, GreenUp Jamestown has worked to organize a number of events encouraging local environmental awareness and action.
