SUMMARY:"Bearing Witness" : St. Luke's Lenten Program 2
DESCRIPTION:Through video\, Scripture\, and discussion\, we explore the situation (past and present) in the Holy Land – with a specific focus on the Episcopal Church’s ministry in the Diocese of Jerusalem. Having spent several years living in Palestine\, Jessica Frederick will lead this session.\n\nPrior to this discussion\, we will gather in the church with a special stations of the cross service – an ancient practice which developed by pilgrims to the Holy Land to bring back some of the mystery and spirituality of Jesus’s march to Golgotha. The stations installed at St. Luke’s symbolically depict Jesus as a monarch butterfly on migration to transformation. These images dovetail with work of the New Neighbors Coalition and brings the stations in to contemporary focus as we invite Jesus into our current global instability and global crisis of human safety around the world.

SUMMARY:Blue Christmas Service
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Blue Christmas service\, a time when we can\, with others\, acknowledge the “blue” feelings we have at Christmas time\, the reasons for them\, and offer them to God.\n\nAs we near the longest night of the year (the Winter Solstice)\, it is right to gather on what has been called the “long dark night of the soul” and “the winter of our discontent” in which memories of past experiences and the pain of present experiences can become overwhelming. For some\,\nChristmas Day is the most difficult. For others\, it may be Christmas Eve\, or New Years Eve\, or the beginning of another lonely New Year.\n\nIn this service\, we’ll have some singing appropriate to the season\, recognizing that this is not a season of joy for everyone. We will invite you to reflect on the pain\, the loneliness\, and the sadness you may feel and offer it to God for healing and transformation. We pray that you will find hope and comfort in knowing that you are not alone. Always remember that God knows your pain and loves you unconditionally

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:St. Luke’s Church and the Jamestown Public and Mobile Market are teaming up with the Chautauqua Area Potters to host the Empty Bowl Project in Jamestown on Saturday\, December 9th. \n“Empty Bowls” is an annual fund raising event held all over the world. Potters everywhere gather to create hundreds of one of a kind ceramic bowls that are given to persons willing to make a modest contribution to a local charity serving food to the hungry. \nLocally\, this event is sponsored by Chautauqua Area Potters (CAP)\, a loosely organized assembly of the area’s amateur and professional potters. Many of these individuals work together at Mudslingers\, the pottery studio owned and operated by Ron Nasca in downtown Fredonia. Others in the group work in their own studios. Over the years the fund drive has met with growing success in Fredonia and now it is coming to Jamestown. \nWhile numerous individuals have created the hundreds of beautiful\, one of a kind bowls\, none are signed by the maker. Instead\, they are imprinted with the “Empty Bowls” logo thus continuing to remind the user that there are hungry persons in the world. The bowls come in sizes designed to acknowledge contributions of $10\, $20\, and $30. \nDuring the Season of Advent when many are preparing for the holiday season and looking for the perfect Christmas gift\, this event will allow you to come get in the holiday season with bowl of soup\, live music\, the opportunity to walk away with a one of a kind gift AND to help address food insecurity in our own community.

SUMMARY:Shaker Song Night
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 1774\, the Shakers are one of America’s oldest religious communities. When you think of the Shakers\, you might think of Shaker furniture\, Shaker boxes\, or the much loved hymn Simple Gifts. In fact\, there are over 10\,000 Shaker songs\, encompassing a variety of styles and topics. \nWho are the Shakers? Why is music so important to them? Are we singing Simple Gifts wrong? \nJoin Sei Paulson at 6pm on Friday\, November 17th in the undercroft\, and get answers to all these questions and more. Sei will share songs and a presentation\, including pictures from her year living with the Sabbathday Lake Shakers in Maine. We will also learn several Shaker hymns. NO musical skill is required\, and you will NOT need to read music! Shaker music is about creating union\, so everyone is welcome. Refreshments will be served.
