SUMMARY:Church Picnic
DESCRIPTION:he St. Luke’s parish picnic is a cherished\, time-honored tradition. You may have read in the May edition of the Voice\, due to a number of factors – coordinating Camp Onyahsa’s increasingly busy camp schedule and the pastoral concerns of moving worship for a Sunday (i.e.\, parishioners and visitors coming to the church on a Sunday morning to find the building locked) – it was time to change the tradition. \nTo that end\, St. Luke’s will celebrate the parish picnic on Saturday\, August 15th at 10 am at Barb and Robert “Doc” Rappole’s farm at 4550 Maple Springs Ellery Rd. This picnic will all the elements we love: shared food\, yard games (Zorb balls!)\, worship\, and even full-immersion baptism—and also incorporate beloved elements of St. Luke’s Church of the Wild services\, with an informal outdoor Eucharist and time to enjoy the Creator and the beauty of creation.

SUMMARY:Global Perspectives Book Club: Guatemalan Rhapsody
DESCRIPTION:Book: Guatemalan Rhapsody\nAuthor: Jared Lemus\nGenre: Short Stories\nWinner of the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize\nA vibrant debut story collection—poignant\, unflinching\, and immersive—masterfully moving between sharp wit and profound tenderness\, Guatemalan Rhapsody offers a kaleidoscopic portrait of an ever-changing country\, the people who claim it as home\, and those who no longer do\nRanging from a custodian at an underfunded college to a medicine man living in a temple dedicated to San Simon\, the patron saint of alcohol and cigarettes\, the characters in these stories find themselves at defining moments in their lives\, where sacrifices may be required of them\, by them\, or for them.\nIn “Saint Dismas\,” four orphaned brothers pose as part of a construction crew\, stopping cars along the highway and robbing anyone foolish enough to hit the brakes. In “Heart Sleeves\,” two wannabe tattoo artists take part in a contest\, where one of them hopes to win not only first place but also the heart of his best friend’s girlfriend. And\, in “Fight Sounds\,” a character who fancies himself a Don Juan is swept up in the commotion of an American film crew shooting a movie in his tiny town\, until the economic and sexual politics of the place are turned on their head.\nAcross this collection\, Lemus’s characters test their loyalty to family\, community\, and country\, illuminating the ties that both connect us and constrain us. Guatemalan Rhapsody explores how we journey from the circumstances that we are forged by\, and whether the ability to change our fortunes lies in our own hands or in those of another. Revealing the places where beauty\, desperation\, love\, violence\, and hope exist simultaneously\, Jared Lemus’s debut establishes him as a major new voice in the form.\nLink to purchase book locally through Good Neighbor Bookstore: https://goodneighborbooks.com/search?q=guatemalan%20rhapsody\nLink to RSVP via Microsoft Forms:\nhttps://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/MA925MmrSG\nWe will be meeting on Tuesday\, August 25\, 2026 at 6pm in the Fenn Library at St. Luke’s Church (in the undercroft\, behind the Johnson Stage). SUMMARY:Global Perspectives Book Club: The Lion Women of Tehran
DESCRIPTION:Book: The Lion Women of TehranAuthor: Marjan KamaliGenre: Historical/literary fiction\nDescription (from Good Neighbor Bookstore webpage):\n\nNEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER\nFrom nationally bestselling author Marjan Kamali\, this perfect book club read is “evocative…and a powerful portrait of friendship\, feminism\, and political activism” (People) set against three transformative decades in Tehran\, Iran. In 1950s Tehran\, seven-year-old Ellie lives in grand comfort until the untimely death of her father\, forcing Ellie and her mother to move to a tiny home downtown. Lonely and bearing the brunt of her mother’s endless grievances\, Ellie dreams for a friend to alleviate her isolation. Luckily\, on the first day of school\, she meets Homa\, a kind girl with a brave and irrepressible spirit. Together\, the two girls play games\, learn to cook in the stone kitchen of Homa’s warm home\, wander through the colorful stalls of the Grand Bazaar\, and share their ambitions of becoming “lion women.” But their happiness is disrupted when Ellie and her mother are afforded the opportunity to return to their previous bourgeois life. Now a popular student at the best girls’ high school in Iran\, Ellie’s memories of Homa begin to fade. Years later\, however\, her sudden reappearance in Ellie’s privileged world alters the course of both of their lives.\nTogether\, the two young women come of age and pursue their own goals for meaningful futures. But as the political turmoil in Iran builds to a breaking point\, one earth-shattering betrayal will have enormous consequences. “Reminiscent of The Kite Runner and My Brilliant Friend\, The Lion Women of Tehran is a mesmerizing tale” (BookPage) of love and courage\, and a sweeping exploration of how profoundly we are shaped by those we meet when we are young.\n\nLink to RSVP via Microsoft Forms:https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/MA925MmrSG\nWe will be meeting on Tuesday\, October 13\, 2026 at 6pm in the Fenn Library at St. Luke’s Church (in the undercroft\, behind the Johnson Stage).

SUMMARY:Rachel's Tears: Liturgy for Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day
DESCRIPTION:In St. Luke’s chapel at 5 pm on October 14th (the eve of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day)\, the church is offering a Service of Remembrance for all those who have experienced the many kinds of grief and loss that may be associated with pregnancy. The experience of this kind of loss is deeply personal. People with all kinds of grief associated with the loss of a pregnancy or infant are welcome. Sometimes\, when it comes to reproductive health\, it can seem like your grief doesn’t “count\,” or they carry shame or blame that their loss is “their fault.” Here at St. Luke’s\, there is no litmus test or judgment: If you are carrying with you the burden of a lost (or ended) pregnancy\, come set that burden down in community – and in the hands of the One who has made and loves us all.

SUMMARY:Letter From a Birmingham Jail: "If Martin Were Here Today"
DESCRIPTION:St. Luke’s will host a special theatrical performance of Letter from a Birmingham Jail: What if Martin Were Still Alive on Thursday\, October 22\, at 7 p.m. The performance is free and open to the public\, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. for light refreshments. Presented by the Buffalo-based Typography of Women\, the production reimagines the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic 1963 “Letter from Birmingham Jail” through a conversation with a younger\, 21st-century version of King confronting the challenges of our own time. Music\, spirituals\, dramatic readings\, and commentary weave together King’s words from more than sixty years ago with questions of racial justice and the work that remains before us today. The performance is sponsored by the WNY & NWPA Commission to Dismantle Racism and Discrimination and St. Luke’s Commission to Dismantle Racism and Discrimination. And is being offered the day before the Diocesan Convention begins. Please join with Episcopalians from around the diocese and community members for this compelling evening of theater\, music\, history\, and reflection—and invite friends and neighbors from throughout the community to come as well.

SUMMARY:Constantine's Cross: A Service of Lament
DESCRIPTION:Christian tradition places Constantine’s vision of a cross in the sky on October 27\, 312\, the eve of the Battle of the Milvian Bridge. After his victory\, Constantine and his fellow emperor Licinius affirmed religious freedom for Christians in 313. Christianity eventually became the empire’s official religion\, beginning a long and complicated relationship between the Church and political power. That history includes extraordinary gifts: hospitals and universities\, expanded education\, and a vision of dignity for every human being. It also carries profound wounds: the Crusades\, pogroms against Jewish communities\, colonialism\, the Doctrine of Discovery\, and the defense of slavery. Too often\, the cross has been used to justify domination\, and the Church has blessed the very oppression it was called to resist. On October 27 at 5pm\, St. Luke’s will host “Constantine’s Cross: A Service of Lament” in the chapel. Through Psalms\, silence\, and prayers\, this brief service will offer space to grieve these harms\, confess the ways Christianity has served state power and oppression\, and renew our commitment to the way of Jesus: love\, humility\, justice\, and peace.

SUMMARY:Dia de Los Muertos
DESCRIPTION:Join New Neighbors Coalition on Monday\, November 2 at 6pm in the St. Luke’s Undercroft\, for a community celebration of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Día de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday celebrated on November 1 and 2 that honors the lives and memories of loved ones who have passed away. Rooted in Indigenous Mexican traditions and influenced by Catholic observances\, the holiday remembers loved ones through colorful ofrendas (altars)\, food\, art\, and storytelling. Together\, we’ll be making conchas\, a traditional Mexican sweet bread\, and decorate a community ofrenda. Please consider bringing a small memento of someone you would like to honor to contribute to the ofrenda. This could be a photograph\, something that belonged to them\, their favorite food/drink\, or candle. We would love to create a big ofrenda of shared remembrance. This event is cultural and educational in nature and is open to everyone\, regardless of background or tradition. Children are welcome and encouraged to attend. Donations of $5-10 suggested to help offset cost of the event. However\, money should not be a barrier\, and all are welcome to attend regardless of ability to pay. SUMMARY:Community Messiah Sing
DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to celebrate the Christmas season by joining the Festival Choir at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and special guests in a community singing of Handel’s Messiah on Sunday\, November 29th at 7pm in the Church. This well-loved local event has become a tradition for many in the Jamestown area as a way to keep the season alive during the week between the Christmas holiday and New Year’s celebrations. The performance is free to the public – both singers and audience members. Written by George Frederic Handel\, the Messiah has become a favorite and familiar Christmas tradition for many. First performed in 1742\, the work recounts the story of the life of Jesus as told in the Bible. Often called “timeless and Inspirational” the piece has become one of the worlds most treasured selections. Phillip McMullen\, Director of Trinity Masterworks Choir in Fredonia\, will be the conductor for the program and Oberlin College student and organist at Chautauqua Institution\, Owen Reyda\, will accompany on St. Luke’s spectacular Aeolian Skinner Organ. The program will include Part 1\, often called the “Christmas portion” of the piece\, as well as the Hallelujah Chorus. Scores will be provided\, although singers who have their own score are invited to bring them. Guests are welcome to sing along or to just come and listen to the music.
