SUMMARY:Special Film Screening of Sugarcane
DESCRIPTION:St. Luke’s Dismantling Racism Commission invites you to a screening of the documentary Sugarcane on Friday\, January 23 at 7:00 PM at Jamestown Community College’s Scharmann Theatre.\nA stunning tribute to the resilience of Native people and their way of life\, Sugarcane is the debut feature documentary by Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie. The film is set in the wake of the 2021 discovery of unmarked graves at a former Indian residential school in Canada\, bringing renewed attention to the forced separation\, assimilation\, and abuse experienced by Indigenous children in church-run boarding schools.\nThrough intimate storytelling\, Sugarcane sheds light on painful histories while also honoring the strength of Indigenous communities as they confront intergenerational trauma and work toward healing and renewal. This screening is part of St. Luke’s ongoing commitment to truth-telling\, listening\, and the work of dismantling racism. All are welcome and the Event is free.

SUMMARY:Soup-or Chili Cook-Off
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, following the final session of the Annual Meeting at the 10 am service\, St. Luke’s hosts an annual Soup-or Chili Cook-Off: Chefs donate their best soups and chilis\, while St. Luke’s community votes for the best culinary creation.\nParticipants pay $2 to purchase a bowl and spoon – plus $1 per scoop of soup. The soup and chili (one in each category) which receive the most “votes” (that is\, scoops of soup) wins! All proceeds from the fundraiser benefit will support a St. Luke’s youth pilgrimage to Italy in February. Six of St. Luke’s youth (from the Confirmation Classes of 2024-26) will be walking the Via Francigena\, an ancient pilgrimage route from Viterbo to Rome.\nTo make this fundraiser a success\, we need YOU: Contestants interested in entering their soup or chili\, contact Jessica Frederick to sign up. For those who are not culinarily-inclined\, bring your appetite and a friend on January 25th.

SUMMARY:Global Perspectives Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Book: Everyone Who Is Gone Is Here: The United States\, Central America\, and the Making of a CrisisAuthor: Jonathan BlitzerGenre: Nonfiction\n\nDescription:Everyone who makes the journey faces an impossible choice. Hundreds of thousands of people who arrive every year at the US-Mexico border travel far from their homes. For years\, the majority came from El Salvador\, Guatemala\, and Honduras\, but many more have begun their journey much farther away. Some flee persecution\, others crime or hunger. They may have already been deported\, but the United States remains their only hope for safety and prosperity. They will take their chances.\nAs Jonathan Blitzer dramatizes with forensic\, unprecedented reporting\, this crisis is the result of decades of misguided policy and sweeping corruption. Brilliantly weaving the stories of Central Americans whose lives have been devastated by chronic political conflict and violence with those of American activists\, government officials\, and the politicians responsible for the country’s tragically tangled immigration policy\, Blitzer reveals the full\, layered picture of this vast and unremitting conflict.\nEveryone Who Is Gone Is Here tells the epic story of the people whose lives ebb and flow across the border\, delving into the heart of American life itself. This vital and remarkable story has shaped the nation’s turbulent politics and culture in countless ways—and will almost certainly determine its future.\n\nLink to purchase book locally through Good Neighbor Bookstore: https://goodneighborbooks.com/book/9781984880826\n\nLink to RSVP via Microsoft Forms:https://forms.office.com/r/MA925MmrSG\nWe will be meeting on Tuesday\, February 17\, 2026 at 7pm in the Fenn Library at St. Luke’s Church (in the undercroft\, behind the Johnson Stage).\n\nNext meeting: Tuesday\, April 21 at 7pmBook: Questions for Ada by Ijeoma Umebinyuo

SUMMARY:Purim Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The New Neighbors Coalition and St. Luke’s Church warmly invite the community—parishioners\, neighbors\, and friends of all ages—to join us for a family-friendly cultural celebration of Purim on Monday\, March 2 at 6pm in the St. Luke’s Undercroft.\n\nPurim is a joyful Jewish festival that celebrates courage\, hope\, and the triumph of light over darkness\, rooted in the ancient story of Queen Esther. Through storytelling\, costumes\, food\, and laughter\, Purim invites communities to remember how faith\, bravery\, and solidarity can change the course of history. At St. Luke’s\, we offer this gathering as an opportunity to learn\, celebrate\, and rejoice together\, honoring our shared values of joy\, resilience\, and care for one another. Children are especially welcome\, and costumes are encouraged.\n\nThe celebration will include age-appropriate activities\, learning how to make hamantaschen and other festive treats\, music\, and storytelling moments that invite participation from the whole family. Members of the Winged Ox Players will stage the drama with audience participation\, bringing the story of Purim to life in a joyful and engaging way.\nThis event is cultural and educational in nature and is open to everyone\, regardless of background or tradition. Come celebrate joy\, friendship\, and the richness of our wider human family.\nDonations of $5-10 suggested to help offset cost of the event. However\, money should not be a barrier\, and all are welcome to attend regardless of ability to pay.

SUMMARY:NNC: Responsible Information Sharing and Rumor Prevention Training
DESCRIPTION:We will discuss how to respond responsibly when hearing or sharing sensitive information that may affect marginalized communities. Together\, we will review how misinformation can spread quickly during uncertain moments\, how rumors can unintentionally cause fear or harm\, and what well-meaning community members should do instead. We will touch on the fact that all community members share a responsibility to verify information before passing it along\, especially when that information could impact people’s safety or sense of security. Attendees will learn how to pause\, confirm information through trusted sources\, ask follow-up questions upon receiving information\, and approach social media posts with an analytical eye to avoid repeating unverified or piecemeal reports. The training will focus on staying grounded in accurate information\, communicating with care\, and supporting trust and safety over spreading rumors. As community members\, it is our collective responsibility to be compassionate\, trusted sources of information to support the safety of all our neighbors. Please use this Microsoft Form to RSVP to either session: https://forms.office.com/r/8nMvuCduRY.  Trainings will take place in the St. Luke’s Undercroft at 410 N Main Street in Jamestown\, New York\, with two opportunities to attend\, Tuesday\, March 10 at 6:30pm and Saturday\, March 14 at 2pm.
